Snakes and Earrings by Hitomi Kanehara
Japanese novella about a girl, body modification, sex and death.
Pros: short read, well translated, lots of character development and plot in such a small book
Cons: kinda gross

I made a TikTok about this earlier today and I summed up my thoughts on it pretty nicely so if you'd rather watch/listen than read, you have that option!
I first read this book back in 2007 or around that time. I used to recommend the book to people so I could show them how wEiRd and EDGY I really was. I wasn't, I just liked weird books and clearly, not much has changed.
The story is short, only 120 pages, and you know that I don't like to give too much away with shorter reads so I will just say a few key things.
I liked the book, the story is pretty raw and chaotic, its gross in places, lots of body modification and other questionable behaviors. It is a Japanese novella and the translation was done pretty well, the story had a lot to offer for it being so short.
If you read it, let me know so we can discuss!
