Pros: obviously a classic, a powerful narrative about who the real monsters are
Cons: a bummer
TW: Death, Murder, Child death, Suicidal thoughts, Death of parent, Violence
Listen… I can’t believe it took me this long to read Mary Shelley’s classic horror sci-fi tale, Frankenstein. I am ashamed that it took me so long actually. I have seen several movie adaptations and with that in mind, I was expecting the classic monster story that I’m familiar with. What I actually got was a very accurate but depressing look at the loneliness that comes with being a little different and the cruelty and terror that humans are capable of. Damn.
I listened to this on audiobook while I was working one day and the entire time I was so sad. Like, Mary Shelley nailed this story because I felt every ounce of loneliness, cruelty and outrage. It is a great book but when you are expecting one thing and get another, it is emotional whiplash and that takes a minute to bounce back from. So if you are like me and are ignorant to the true story of Frankenstein… you’ve have now been warned.
