Pros: funny, quick writing style, pop culture references that were fun, brutal story that doesn’t hold back, breaking the 4th wall, so gross I haven’t fully recovered yet
Cons: absolutely disgusting
TW: necrophilia, cannibalism, death, gore, body horror, drug abuse, pregnancy, abortion, self mutilation (there may be more but I had a hard time finding a thorough list.)
Over the past couple of weeks, someone has commented "You should read Dead Inside!!!" on my Tiktok at least once a day. I have seen this book around the internet for a while and after much pressure... I read it. It is fairly short- 191 pages -so I don't want to give too much away but I will give you a taste (excuse the pun).
This book is gross. It was gross from the very first page and didn't ease up until the very last sentence. There is a lot of gore, graphic descriptions of unspeakable acts and the writing style is very quick, in your face and snarky. As soon as I read the first 3 sentences, I had a pretty good idea of where we were headed so I emotionally prepared myself and plunged ahead. However, I still wasn't ready for what was coming. I think that is where I will leave you; just know that if you decide to read this one, be sure you're not eating anything and you give yourself a little time to recover before you are expected to eat something. I wouldn't bring this book to a cookout for example. I gagged one time when I was eating a pickle. Beware!
I did hear a lot of folks saying that they didn't care for the MMC, that he was whiny, annoying, etc. but I think that was the point. He absolutely was all of those things on top of being deeply depraved. I was under no assumption that I was supposed to like this man and I didn't. My favorite aspect of this book was the humor. The author did a great job of providing levity in the center of an otherwise horrific scene and I always appreciate that. Humor helps bring me back to earth when it feels like I'm on a one way stop to hell. It was a really fun read because of that and I definitely recommend it if you tend to veer towards disgusting body horror, vicious and violent with no end in sight. It's a quick read, fast paced, funny and fucking brutal.
I also recorded a deep dive episode of the podcast on this book and it is a doozy.
