If you're curious about this morbid horror/fantasy, I have a few ways for you to become acquainted with it!
You may know - or you may not know - that I selected Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman as our main read for Weirdo Book Club, January 2024.
I did so for two reasons:
I read it last year and I enjoyed it. There were so many things in this book that appealed to me. It is set in 14th century France, angels and demons are at war and the Black Plague is in full swing. But in the spirit of being honest, I wasn’t entirely sure I absorbed it. I don’t do a lot of fantasy because I think I have aphantasia (the inability to create mental imagery) so when I’m thrust into a world of high fantasy, I am lost and struggling to make sense of it all. So while I knew that I enjoyed it, I wasn’t sure how much. So…
I wanted to be able to discuss it with my friends. One of my favorite things about our book club meetings is that we get to discuss these things together, sift through the worlds and offer different opinions and perspectives. I feel like that is one of the best parts of being in a book club. So this book was perfect for that reason alone. I can’t wait to dig into it with everyone!
If you’re not interested in joining our book club but you would like to either read it or be able to enjoy a discussion about it… I have a few links for you.
The first one is the audiobook on YouTube. It is free to enjoy if you’re curious but not willing/able to buy yourself a copy right now. The other big perk of this is that it’s narrated by the author himself! How fun.
Next, I went on a hunt after my first read through of it and found this podcast episode that I really liked. Obviously there will be spoilers and stuff, so fair warning, but I thought they did a good job of breaking things down, informing me and entertaining me!
Last, I found a few reviews on YouTube that I think offer great perspectives too! Some of these reviews were raves, others were more critical and all of them offer something different. The first one was from Books and Bianca, the second was from Jason Fuhrman and last, we have Questworthy.
